Cross Mountain Park
Cross Mountain Park is a historical marl and limestone hill, before the early settlers, Native Americans used it as a lookout. While settling in Fredericksburg, early pioneers installed a timber cross at the summit. When a German settler received a town lot and 10 acres, including the hill, he found the cross and named it “Kreuzberg” meaning Cross Mountain. If you follow the winding trail up to the summit, 1951 feet up, you will be able to get up close to a new, more substantial cross. That was installed by a nonconformist priest, Father George Menzel, to represent redemption and civilization. In 1946, Rev. F. X. Wolf switched the lights on and to this day, the cross stays permanently lit.
